“I’m learning It’s a two-way street with God!” said my daughter after returning from youth group.
I am amazed by how often she is my teacher. I sat with what she said and replied, “Yes, girl you are absolutely right. It’s so simple but we really complicate our relationship with Jesus!”
She said, “The more you talk to him, the more He will talk to you! It’s actually so simple!”
I’ve heard many people say, “God doesn’t talk to me and especially not like he does you.”
Could it be we are saying nothing? Could it be we are making excuses? Could it be we are saying words to God but not really talking to him from our heart? Could we be repeating the same short prayer over and over with zero heart?
Growing up I was scared to pray and do not put me on the spot at a family gathering! Nope. In early adulthood, I hid behind my husband.
Maybe you can relate to my thoughts:
“What if I sound dumb?”
“I don’t know all the Bible things.”
“It will not sound like Tammy’s prayers so I’m not doing it.”
Those were a few lies that swirled in my head. But here is what the bible says:
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7 (NIV)
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)
I want to encourage you to talk to God. Just as you are. Wherever you are. I remember my beginning prayers when I was starting over with Jesus.
“I don’t know what or if I believe in you! If you’re here, can you show me? Can you give me eyes to see you?”
Be honest. Be you. It doesn’t need to be formal. It’s a conversation. He will show up to you. Keep talking and talking. Sentence prayers are an easy way to build and strengthen your friendship with Him. Never say Amen in your day. Talking to God all day was weird in the beginning. As a child I was conditioned to pray “Dear God and always end with Amen”.
Jesus is your friend. Not a 911 call when life is traumatic. He is always available for strength, hope and motivation. Always. No matter what you are facing. He wants to hear the good, the bad, and all the things in between. You don’t need to sound like anyone except yourself. Your life story is different, and your days are different.
Just talk to Him no matter your emotions! You can do it!
